NOW YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!
by CHRIS MILLS
EXETER City fans were this afternoon told 'Your Club Needs You'
as the Grecians faced a battle for league survival.
They need to win this weekend to be sure of beating the drop after
a 4-1 drubbing on Saturday left them still in danger of plunging
out of the Nationwide League.
The defeat at Northampton left fourth-from-bottom City five points
clear of floundering Brighton and Hove Albion with two games remaining.
Exeter, facing a tough climax to the season at title-chasing Carlisle
on May 3, need to beat Chester in their last home action of the
Division Three season to be sure of survival.
Exeter manager Peter Fox admitted: "The result at Northampton
has now put the pressure on us to go out and win our last home
game."
If City beat Chester they will be safe.
Today the Echo is urging everyone - supporter or not to get behind
the Grecians. And we have received rnessages from some Very Important
Supporters.
Mayor Ian Mitchell rang in to say: "City are fighting hard
for survival and now is the time for everyone to back them.
"The club has made great strides off the field and in sorting
out the finances.
If they survive through to the next season, I am sure we will
finally see the progress on the pitch we all want."
One of city's die-hard
fans is enlisting the talents of his famous father
to help the cause.
Daniel Geller, son of famous spoonbender Uri, has been following
Exeter for four years and leaves e-mail for fellow fans on the
club's Internet site.
Uri faxed the Echo to say: "Even if you are not a football
fan, you must back the team now and think of them on Saturday.
If City stay up, the feel good factor and the vibrations will
spread throughout the whole of Devon."
"If you can't go listen on the radio but if you can sing
and shout as loudly as you can."
City chairman Ivor Doble said: "Dads, bring your sons. Mums,
bring your daughters. Husbands, bring your wives. Your club needs
you now. We are lucky still to have league football in Exeter
after our troubles but the team must stay in the league."
And Exeter Rugby Club chairman John Baxter said: "Many of
our supporters go to both St James's Park and the County Ground
so obviously we are backing the football club to stay up.. Come
on, City! "
So send us your messages of support for the team...and Back City
to Beat the Drop.
